"My boiler was very noisy. Called Kirk and he serviced my boiler. Now my boiler runs smooth again."
Follow these steps first — they fix a surprising number of boiler problems at no cost. If none of these work, call us and we'll be with you fast.
Check the consumer unit for a tripped fuse
Start by checking if a tripped fuse is the culprit. Head to your electrical consumer unit (usually in a cupboard, under the stairs, or in the garage) and look for any switches in the "off" position or circuit breakers that have flipped to a "tripped" position.
The boiler is typically on its own dedicated circuit, labelled "boiler," "heating," or "hot water." If you spot a tripped switch, firmly push it fully off and then back to the "on" position. Wait a minute or two, then check if the boiler restarts.
Important: If it trips again immediately, stop resetting it — there may be an electrical fault. That's when you call us.
Write down the code before it disappears — it's your engineer's shortcut
Check your boiler's display panel for a fault code — common examples include E1, F75, EA, or L2 (exact format varies by brand: Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi, etc.). If a code is showing, write it down immediately along with your boiler's make and model.
These fault codes act like a diagnostic fingerprint — they pinpoint the exact reason for the breakdown, whether it's low pressure, ignition failure, a sensor fault, or a pump problem. When you call us, having the code ready means our engineer arrives with the right parts and can often fix the problem in a single visit.
Pro tip: Snap a photo on your phone — the code often disappears when you try to reset.
The most common — and most easily fixed — boiler problem
Find the pressure gauge on your boiler — a small round dial with a needle or a digital readout measured in bars. For most combi and system boilers, the ideal range is 1 to 1.5 bars when cold. If the needle is below 1 bar (often in the red zone), the boiler will lock out for safety.
To repressurise: locate the filling loop (a flexible silver hose or two small valves beneath the boiler). Open the valve(s) slowly until the pressure climbs to 1.2–1.5 bars, then close them tightly. Wait 5 minutes for the boiler to reset.
If the pressure is above 2.5–3 bars, turn off the filling loop immediately and call us — over-pressure can indicate a faulty expansion vessel.
"Saw E118, followed the pressure step, boiler fired up in 10 minutes! Still called Kirk for peace of mind."
Spotted a code on your boiler? Here are the most common ones and what they mean. If yours isn't listed or the self-check doesn't fix it, call us.
| Fault Code | Likely Issue | Quick Self-Check | Our Typical Fix Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| E118 | Low pressure | Gauge below 1 bar? Repressurise via filling loop (see Step 3 above). | 30–60 mins |
| F75 | Flame failure | Is gas supply on? Check other gas appliances in the home. | 45–90 mins |
| EA | Ignition lockout | Try a reset. Code persists? Don't keep resetting — call us. | 1–2 hours |
| L2 | Overheat stat triggered | Bleed radiators — airlocks can cause this. Still showing? Call us. | 20–45 mins |
Pro Tip: Photograph the code and your boiler's model label before calling — we'll arrive prepared.
Windows are the biggest source of heat loss. Keep curtains drawn to trap warmth in the room.
Focus warmth where you need it most. Keep doors closed to rooms you're not using.
A bowl of soup or a hot cup of tea warms you from the inside — underrated in a boiler emergency.
Residual heat from cooking can warm the kitchen. Never leave it unattended or use a gas oven for heating.
